1. BECK, John W 'CAPT'. - b. 1746, probably Queen
Anne Co., Maryland, (or Virginia) d. August 29, 1816, Ohio Co., West
Virginia, bur. Stanley Sonde Farm, Ohio Co., near West
Liberty, West Virginia, son of John Beck, a Quaker and
Sophia (King) Beck of Beck's Addition, Queen Anne Co.,
Maryland, m. June 13, 1784, Kent Co., Maryland, Rebecca
Ann Miller, b. April 1, 1763, St. Paul's Parish, Kent Co.,
Maryland, d. August 22, 1853, Ohio Co., West Virginia,
bur. Stanley Sonde Farm, Ohio Co., near West Liberty, West
Virginia, the daughter of Nathaniel Miller and Elizabeth
Beck Miller. (The Stanley Sonde Farm, Potomac Road, was formerly owned by the
Becks.)
John and Rebecca moved to Ohio County Va. in 1775. He was
an officer in the Virginia Continental Line. John Beck
served as a volunteer in Lord Dunmore's War and was
subsequently with McDonald. He then joined the regular
Army with Colonel John Gibson's Virginia Regiment serving
from January 1, 1780, to December 6, 1781. He also
served for some time at Fort Pitt and was with General
McIntosh when the fort was built. Captain Beck commanded
the Fort at Wheeling for nine months and the Fort at
Holliday's cove during a summer. On December 31, 1782 when
John left the Army he took five years full pay from the
Government rather than half-pay for life. In 1785 he filed
for 890 acres on Buffalo Creek (In actuality he filed
warrants that totaled over 3110 acres). See Source
Image and actual Land Bounty Certificate Here.

* I received the above lookup request from the DAR
February 5, 2003. It does appear that there is
conflicting information where 'CAPT' John Beck was born.
It makes sense that he would have been born in Maryland
to me, but many sources indicate Virginia. The old
census images only show the head of the household and
the number of and ages of females and males in the home.
I expect to hear more on this in the near future and
will update this page when I hear something definate.
