Elizabeth's headstone reads: Elizabeth
Wharton - Wife of Nelson Wharton - b. May 15, 1802 - d.
Feb. 18, 1857.
Note: I have very little information about Nelson and
Elizabeth Wharton and their children. The GEDCOM file
that I am using for some of the data shows that Nelson
and Elizabeth had three other children; George, born
Abt.
1832, William, born Abt. 1842, and Jacob, born Abt.
1844. If this were true these children would appear in
the 1850 census and they do not. These children's
names and ages do not show up or fit into any of the
census data that I have come across so far. It could be that these children died in infancy which
tragically happened often during those times. Elizabeth
died in 1857, and the 1860 census shows that Nelson and
a Lucinda Wharton, who is probably Nelson's daughter,
are living with Bayless and Sarah Wharton and their
children. Nelson and Lucinda are still found to be
living with Bayless in the 1870 census as well.

Notes: Obituary from Knob Noster
Gem, April 21, 1899:
DEATH: JOHNSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY - A SUDDEN DEATH - This community was
startled Sunday morning on learning that Mrs. Bayless Wharton had been found
dead in her bed. She had retired with her husband in usual health, although
she had been suffering lately with rheumatism. About 2 o'clock, Mr.
Wharton discovered that the room was getting cool and rose to get some extra covering.
He noticed that his wife lay very still and investigated. He was horrified to
find that she was dead. He woke the other members of the family and near
neighbors were called. Mrs. Wharton, whose maiden name was Sarah Elizabeth
Jones, was born in Belmont County, Ohio on May 19, 1839 and hence would have
been 60 years old next month. She was married in October 1855 at Wheeling,
West Virginia to Bayless Wharton and lived there until 1879 when they moved
with eight children to Pettis county in this state. After a residence there of
three years they moved to Knob Noster where they have since resided. Two
children preceded her to the grave and seven with her aged companion remain to
mourn her loss. The deceased was converted and joined the
M.E. church when about fifteen years of age and was ever after a faithful
Christian worker. For
many years she was blind and only a few years ago had her sight almost
completely restored, but through this affliction her
faith remained steadfast. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lehr assisted by Rev. J. S.
Porter at the M. R. church Monday afternoon and the body was afterward laid to
rest in the city cemetery.
Obituary from Knob Noster Gem, Sept,
11, 1903:
DEATH: DIED WHILE HE SLEPT - Bayless
Wharton an old and honorable citizen of this
community died at his home just south of this
city some time during Monday night. He had been
an invalid for the past six months or more and
several times during the past spring and summer
it was thought the end was near. Last Monday he
appeared to be very much better than for some
time. About ten
o'clock that night the family retired with him
sleeping quietly and no sign of approaching
dissolution. About three o'clock Tuesday morning
the condition of his body indicated that he had
been dead for some time. Mr. Wharton was born in
Rappahannock County, Virginia, Nov 5, 1822 He
was married in October 1855 to Sarah O. Jones at
Wheeling, West Virginia and resided there until
1879 when
they moved with their eight children to Missouri
where they have since resided. His wife died in
1899 under similar circumstances. The surviving
children are Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Witter, Mrs. Joe
Marshall, Mrs. Will Young, Homer, Harry, and
Ivan Wharton. He was converted and joined the
M.E. Church in early life and remained a true
and faithful member until death. The funeral was
preached by
Rev. A.C. Boyd at the M.E. church at 10:30
o'clock Wednesday morning followed by interment
in the family lot at the city cemetery.

census data along with Nelson who resided with
Bayles in 1860 and 1870. In all three census her
age fluctuates by a couple of years. I am

daughter of Nelson and Elizabeth and the sister of
Bayles. Over time maybe more information will
