above picture is a copy of an original flyer for Don's orchestra
when they appeared at two theatres that were in San
Francisco, California. This showbill is from some time during 1920's and to about 1931. I have a newspaper
clipping from The San Francisco Chronicle dated 1930, regarding
Don's purchase of a new Graham Paige automobile that refers to
"Don Leon popular leader of the New Fillmore theater
band".
The New Fillmore Theatre was located at, 1329 Fillmore Street, San
Francisco, California (map).
The New Fillmore opened in 1917, closed in 1957, and eventually
torn down. You may see pictures of the
beautiful New Fillmore Theatre Here.
The New Fillmore Theatre was a sister theater to The New Mission
Theatre located at 2550 Mission Street, San Francisco, California (map).
The New Mission opened in 1916, closed in 1993 and has been used
as a furniture showroom. It is still standing today and is in the
process of being designated a City Landmark. Pictures of the New Mission Theatre
can be seen Here.
These photographs were taken in 1943 and are part of The San
Francisco Library Photographic Collection that is
"on-line".
I have been able to find Don in the 1930 U.S. Census for San
Francisco, California, where he lived with his wife Sallie,
their daughter Loraine, and his mother Ella (Rubinstein) Frankel
on Vasquez Avenue.
NOTE: I am especially thankful to my sister, Janis R. (Frankel)
Rieks, for the clippings, photos and memorabilia about our father
that she recently came across and the copies that she sent to me.
